I'm just going to go on record of saying that I really didn't like the majority of the Archie Mega Man comic story. It had a few highs/notable stories here and there - but they were few and far between. Overall Archie Mega Man was very mediocre - and that's entirely down to Ian.

It was for the most part unremarkable, and yeah, inoffensive. For the most part Ian just went through the motions of getting from story point A to story point B - not really doing anything inbetween to challenge the reader.

And just how exactly did you want Ian to 'challenge' them? Did you want Rush to get run over by a truck perhaps? Maybe kill off Roll to give Rock robotpain? Perhaps reveal Doctor Light to be the real villain and have Wily be the tragic misunderstood hero all along?

Seriously. Just because the comic was 'inoffensive' doesn't mean it wasn't good. It was a great adaptation of the games that was faithful to them while also expanding on the source material. It didn't need to 'challenge' the reader, it just needed to be fun. Not everything needs to be 'challenging.'

*cough Sonic the Comic cough*

Had it continued past the Sonic Adventure arc, sooner or later Egmont would've been forced to adhere to mandates.

I dunno. He did a good job writing the "Mega Man" comics and that itself was a looser adaptation of the source material. I'm guessing readers found it easier to jump into since it wasn't a direct continuation of anything that came before.

Yeah, a lot of his abilities were underdeveloped when he first came on board with Archie as a Sonic artist - but he's really shown his ability to grow into the role. He's a much better comic artist now than he was a couple of years ago.

The thing with the IDW book is that it's going to be so busy trying to establish the new status quo that Ian doesn't have to worry about fixing anything or even trying to challenge and shake things up. This early on it's just going to be "Are these characters fun to read and are we invested enough to keep buying issues."

It's still a bit too early to call the new series out on that. If there were any factors we know affected Ian's quality in writing, it was definitely the change in the editor - most of the stuff published following "Worlds Unite" was pretty different in tone and direction compared to what had come before. It's likely that the person in charge of editorial has great influence in stimulating his skills as a writer.

For Hughes, we haven't got to see how influential his contributions are to Ian's writing yet. Maybe he'll good a good job at bringing out Ian's best qualities, or maybe not. Who knows yet?

I generally agree with Mobotropolis' assessment that more recently Ian has played things a bit too safe but I also feel he is excellent at giving voices to his characters understanding their game counterparts and interpreting them as well fleshed out personalities in comic book form. That's what's made his work on Megaman, Sonic Boom and the Sonic Megadrive specials so engaging.

Sonic is SEGA's property. He doesn't have any choice but to honour the mandates. He's not in a position of authority to challenge them. He can run ideas by SEGA, but if they say no, then that's the final word. End of.

There are reasons the mandates exist. Previous writers having too much freedom and going completely off the rails with overblown stories and extraneous characters is one of them.

I don't necessarily agree with all of them or the strict nature of some of the mandates, but I understand why they are there.

@Mobotropolis - I quite liked the Bunny/Antoine relationship stuff, more precisely the stuff that Bunny was going through with the whole King Naugus thing. As for Snively, I would have loved to have seen how that played out if he had become a villain in his own right. As for Rotor, I headcanoned him into being Tails' sorta mentor/teacher in the whole engineering dept. But I agree that character development is necissary for the continuation of a Book/Comic/Manga

A little headcanon that just occurred to me is that Sonic, with help from Uncle Chuck, could’ve made Bunnie and Antoine’s wedding bands out of Power Rings, just like his parents’.  It would’ve been his wedding gift as best man.
