Sonic and the Freedom Fighters -- Blue Horizon
« on: July 25, 2017, 07:46:56 PM »
Hi everybody! :D So I am a big Sonic fan. I've played the games, watched the shows, read the comics, you name it. But as I've gone through all of these different incarnations, there was one thing I've noticed that all of them have in common; they don't really have a lot in common. ??? Every single version has its' own set of main characters aside from Sonic and co and its' own take on the source material if it even has much at all to do with the source material. Now, not all versions of Sonic are keepers, (Underground and X, I'm looking at you,) but there's still something of worth in even the biggest pile of dogpoo, and the actual good fragments of the Sonic franchise (the games, Sat AM, Archie, Fleetway, Boom,) have a heck of a lot of worth. And it was when I was thinking about all of this that something occurred to me. Why hasn't anyone ever tried to merge all of the best aspects of these disparate parts of the franchise into one great unified whole? Well, this is my way of doing just that.

Sonic and the Freedom Fighters -- Blue Horizon is my attempt to mishmash the best parts of the Sonic multiverse into one big composite universe. It draws more on the games and Archie (both Preboot and Postboot,) than anything else, but it's got something from everything. The biggest thing it takes from all of the different versions though is the characters. Anyone who's ever been a Freedom Fighter or a main character  is here, making for one bigarse mega-team. (Though the Chaotix and Team Dark are still doing their own things, obviously. Chaotix has Mighty and Ray by the way.) Think Justice League Unlimited or Legion of Superheroes. I've also got a list of this verse's Freedom Fighters at the bottom in case anyone wants to know the full roster, but suffice to say, it's huge. But that's not a bad thing. What it really does is give me a buttload of opportunities for storytelling. One story might focus on Sonic with Tails and Antione as side characters, while another might be about Antione with Porker Lewis and Sticks tagging along. I don't have to have everyone in every story, so it works out fine and dandy. But everyone's in there, even some supporting characters from Archie and Fleetway who are now major players here, and part of the fun is just having everyone in one place.

Anyhoo, here's links for the first Chapter, one at Fanfiction.net and another at Archive of Our Own. This chapter is mainly about setting things up, introducing the initial roster of Freedom Fighters and setting the stage for what's to come, ending with Robotnik taking over South Westside Island and the Acorn Kingdom that inhabits it. (South Westside Island is South Island and Westside Island smashed into one basically.) It's a long first chapter, so don't be afraid to read it in multiple sittings if you need to. Anyway, without further adue...

If anyone's got any questions, let me know. I've also got a timeline worked out if anyone wants to take a look at it. Also, here's a full lineup of Freedom Fighters for those who want to take a looksie:

-Sally Acorn
-Bunny Rabbot
-Mina Mongoose
-Razor  (Has new fancy water and ice powers thanks to a magic knife from his pirate days. Which is where he starts here by the way.)
-Porker Lewis
-Johnny Litefoot
-Mighty (Joins temporarily to find his sister after he learns shes with Robotnik, then rejoins the Chaotix after hes found her.)
-Manic (Sonia and Manic are Sonic's cousins here by the way.)
-Chirps (Based off of the chicken from Sonic 1. If the squirrel, rabbit, and pig can be turned into main characters, then so can the chicken. ;))
-Silver (He joins up after choosing to stay in the past for a while after a healthy dose of Character Development.)
-Blaze (After getting stuck in our dimension for a time, she joins the Freedom Fighters with nowhere else to go, though she does eventually return to her dimension.)
-Feels the Shapechanging Rabbit

Nice selection of characters.

Do you have a list of villains in mind as well? There's quite a number of them.

Oh yes. Robotnik's the obvious Big Bad, and he drives the first part of the story, but there's other villains to deal with too. You've of course got other villains working for Eggman, namely Snively, Grimer, Sleet and Dingo, Orbbot and Cubebot, Scratch&Grounder&Coconuts, and the Eggbosses. But aside from them, you've also got Scourge, Ixus Naugus, Dr.Finitevius, Lein-Da, the Nocturnus Clan, (the former two start out as part of the latter by the way,)  the Desctructix, Team Hooligan, Colonel Granite, Breezy, the Battle Bird Armada, (they're free agents and not part of the Eggman Empire, ala Tails' Adventure and Preboot Archie,) and the Babylon Rouges, and maybe more besides.  And after Sonic Heroes, Metal Sonic keeps his Metal Overlord look while renaming himself Mettalix and continues to operate on his own, so you've also got him out there too. There's also a big arc later on that reimagines Shadow the Hedgehog and turns it into an epic war involving a five way struggle between the Black Arms, the Draconians from Sonic the Comic, the Metarex from Sonic X, the Eggman Empire, and everyone else. So suffice to say, Eggman isn't the only player here, though it's going to be a while before everyone else gets their chance in the spotlight.

Chapter 3's up, again both at FF.net and Archive of Our Own. Same length as the last one.

Chapter 4's up, both at FF.net and Archive, as usual.  Next chapter should hopefully wrap up the opening arc and have the Freedom Fighters officially form, and we can finally slow down a bit (ironic, I know,) with a couple of shorter stories with smaller casts before moving onto the next big thing: Green Hill. And Amy. And Cream and Big. Along with a little surprise somewhere in the middle of all that.

And Chater 5 is up, both at Fanfiction.net and Archive of Our Own. At over 15,000 words, this sucker's a long one, so don't be afraid to read it in multiple sittings if you need to. That said, this also wraps up the opening arc, so now's the perfect chance to jump if you haven't yet. If you've got any questions, just let me know. :)

Chapter 6 of Blue Horizon is up at FF.net and Archive, and this is one is much shorter than the last one, clocking in at just 6,500 words or so. We also get another future Freedom Fighter right at the end of the Chapter, and anyone who's seen Sonic Boom might be able to guess who it is. Hint: It's Sticks. As for the Chapter itself, it takes a step back from all the craziness that went on in the first arc and just gives Sonic some much needed Character Development, while also focusing on Mina and Bunnie a bit too. Of all of the chapters I've written, I think this is the one I'm the most satisfied with. It's just a nice little Character Driven yarn, and there's nothing wrong with that. And besides, things are going to ramp up again soon anyway. It's nice to have a break every once in a while.

Just out of curiosity, is anyone from around these parts reading Blue Horizon? I may not be doing this for the views,  but it'd still be nice to see if anyone from this forum's giving it a whirl.

Right. Chapter 7 is up, both at FF.net and Archive. We finally get introduced to Sticks, and we get some character development to boot, but it's mainly a prelude to the next big arc in Green Hill that's still set to introduce Amy, Cream, and Big to the cast. We also get our first few Egg Bosses to boot, and one of them's going to be someone you probably won't expect.

Chapter 8's up, both at FF.net and Archive. This Chapter kickstarts the Green Hill arc while also bringing in Amy, Cream, and Big as well as introducing the Egg Bosses, including one that I don't think anyone would expect: SwiftyTheShrew.

Swifty's here for one reason. Throughout most of Blue Horizon, Scourge is going to be Sonic's main rival, but I knew it was going to be a while before I was able to bring him in. So I was figuring out who I could use as a rival until then, and it was while I watching an ep of Sonic Boom that it hit me: Swifty the Shrew. He's fast, he's got attitude, and if done right could be a great counterpart to Sonic. Just make him Mobian instead of a robot and we're set. Now, once Scourge comes into the picture, Swifty's role as a rival to Sonic is naturally going to be lessened, but he'll still be around. Basically, I always thought Team Dark was just a bit too small for my liking, so that's where he's going to wind up once Sonic Heroes rolls around.

Okay, just an FYI. I know some readers have expressed that they'd prefer shorter chapters, so I decided to compromise. Fanfiction.net still has the chapters at the original lengths, but Archive will have shorter split versions of the chapters. So if anyone wanted to get into this series but they felt couldn't due to the chapter length, that shouldn't be a problem anymore. I've also updated the previous chapters, just to clean things up a bit. With any luck, they'll be a bit easier to read.

Anyhoo, Chapter 9 is done! It's up on Fanfiction net, as well as Archive as Chapters 20 and 21. This one is where things start to get dark. There's still fun to be had, certainly, but War Is Hell, and that's something that needs to be acknowledged. Suicide is Painless might as well be the theme song at this point, just to give you an idea of where this is heading. Honestly, I didn't expect it to turn out this way, but I'm kind of glad it did.

Just an FYI, but I decided to split the bigger chapters up into smaller ones on FF.net after all. Just letting you all know.

Anyhoo, Chapters 22, 23, and 24 were posted over the last several days. It's mostly just wrapping things up and hinting at things to come. But the next one should be a bit more interesting.

'A Day in The Life of Tekno: Part 1' is up. (Chapter 25) It's Exactly What It Says on the Tin. This chapter is a bit experimental, being written as though it were taken from a character's journal and thus being done in a First Person POV. The idea is to help give some focus to a character who hasn't gotten much until now, and if this works out, I might do these sorts of Chapters more in the future, though it definitely wouldn't become a regular thing.

Also, in case you couldn't tell, Tekno in this fic isn't exactly 'normal.' It's been built up to well enough ever since her debut, but it's the next Chapter that's finally going to make it plain just what's wrong with her. Though as someone who has the same thing she does, I wouldn't exactly call it 'wrong.' And she feels the same way. (Mostly. Even I have my doubts sometimes.)

Right. Thanks to serendipity, A Day in the Life of Tekno: Part 2 (Chapter 26) is up. This Chapter sets up the Battle Bird Armada from Tails Adventure and the Archie Comics, but it mostly goes into Tekno's backstory, and it's finally revealed just what she's got: Asperger's Syndrome. No special, super-magical disease or affliction anything like that. Just Asperger's. And there's nothing wrong with that.

Now, anyone who has read Sonic the Comic knows that Tekno did, in fact, not have Aspergers, and if this were Sonic the Comic, then I wouldn't even be touching this. But the thing is, Tekno's a character that never really did much for me. There was potential, sure, but they never did anything with it, instead just making her the one-note scientist and tech-person who goes on adventures with Amy. I'm aiming to rectify that, but I'm doing it in my own way.

What I did was look at Tekno and say to myself, is there anything about her that could really be expanded on? And then I realized that for what we get of her, Tekno actually shares certain traits with that of a high-functioning aspie. Nothing overt, but it's there. Now, as for how I know this? Because I am one. And when you're an aspie, you tend to be able to hone in on characters that may or may not be aspies themselves, even if the writers didn't even intend to make them that way. And so, I saw the opportunity to give this version of Tekno the depth that the original one was lacking while also being able to write the kind of aspie you don't always never see in fiction. I also knew I had to let the reader know point-blank that she's an aspie, because nine times out of ten, they just aren't going to get it for sure unless you do so. And again, seeing as I'm an aspie, I'm a better authority on this subject than most.

That said, that's not all that's going on in this Chapter. Most of it's about Tekno, but right at the end, we fully descend into MASH territory with one little word: FOODFIGHT! It's gonna be a hoot.
